How to Make a Minecraft Skin

Step 1: Open the editor and pick a starting point

Open the editor and choose one of two starting points:

  1. Start blank. You get an empty 64×64 canvas and paint from scratch. Best for an original character.
  2. Import a PNG. Use Import to load an existing 64×64 skin, then edit on top of it. Best for redesigning a skin you already have.

A blank canvas has transparent pixels everywhere, so nothing shows on the model until you paint. That is expected. Pick a base color and lay down the head and torso first to give yourself a visible shape to build on.

Step 2: Choose Classic or Slim first

Step 3: Block in the base layer

With the base layer active, block in the large areas before any detail:

  • Use Fill to flood a whole region with one color — good for a shirt or trouser block.
  • Use Pencil for edges, single pixels, and small shapes.
  • Use Color picker to sample a shade you already placed so it matches exactly.
  • Use Undo and Redo freely; they protect earlier states while you experiment.

Work part by part: skin tone on the head and any exposed limbs, then hair, then shirt, then trousers, then shoes. Rotate the model with the Rotate tool after each part so you can confirm the front, back, and sides all match. The base should read as a complete character on its own, because it stays visible whenever the overlay is hidden.

Step 4: Add detail on the overlay layer

Switch to the overlay layer for raised accents: bangs and hair strands, a hood or collar, glasses, gloves, cuffs, shoulder panels, or armor trim. Paint only the pixels you want raised and leave the rest transparent so the base shows through.

Step 5: Check every side in 3D

The live 3D preview is where you catch problems the flat canvas hides. Rotate the model and inspect:

  • Seams. A stripe or pattern that lines up on the front can break where it wraps to the side. Nudge edge pixels until the pattern continues cleanly.
  • The back. It is easy to forget. Give the back of the head, torso, and legs the same attention as the front.
  • Narrow edges. The thin side faces of arms and legs are small but visible in game.
  • Transparent gaps. A stray transparent pixel on the base can make the skin render incorrectly. Fill it.

Step 6: Export a clean 64×64 PNG

When the skin looks right from every angle, use Download to export a 64×64 PNG. Before you export, confirm:

  • The base has no accidental transparent gaps.
  • The overlay holds only the details you intended.

Common first-skin mistakes

  • Choosing the model after drawing the arms. Decide Classic or Slim in Step 2 and stick with it. Fixing arm width later means repainting sleeves.
